Do Not Be Deceived.

It’s a very clear warning.

I came across a Bible verse a while ago:

‘Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

I Corinthians 15:33

I found this very interesting.

Do not be deceived

It’s a common notion that it’s easier to be influenced by negative company than by positive company.

Just like it’s easier to fall down than it is to climb up.

Why is this so?

Maybe it’s because it’s our default human/fallen nature to enjoy evil, and usually once you get a taste of sin, it can be very addictive.

A lot of times, we think we are ‘strong enough’ to be in the midst of corrupt people and not be like them. But this bible verse is a warning to us, ‘do not be deceived’.

There are many verses in the bible that tell us to remain in the company of people who are like-minded and who are not involved actively in evil activities.

‘Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;’

Psalms 1:1

‘Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? ‘

II Corinthians 6:14

You are the light of the world, so what business do you have being in fellowship with darkness?

I hear your argument

I know that it’s not everyone you come in contact with that will share the same values as you.

But being in the company or close friendship with people who are not living in a manner that is pleasing unto God is another matter entirely.

It is easier to be corrupted by them.

Light does not mix with darkness, light is meant to dispels darkness.

But if light continues to be surrounded by more and more darkness, the light eventually becomes dim.

So surround yourself with more people of light and together, let your lights shine brighter and brighter.

‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’ — Matthew 5:16
